Pool Questions and Answers
If
your pool is cloudy and you don't know why you first need to check
the following levels:
If any of these
levels are incorrect this will cause cloudiness.
Why
is my water green, yet I smell chlorine? |
Chlorine
could be locked out due to over chlorinating. Take a water
sample and test for high levels.
Why is my water clear but has a green tinge? |
Check chlorine reading then shock pool as needed. Check out the alkalinity
first.
I have black, green or yellow patches on the water surface? |
Most nonmetal based algaecides will correct this problem. Simply follow
the directions on the bottle.
Why is the water a rust color? |
This is a sign of iron in the water.
-
Use
sequestering agent in water and run filter 24 hours
Don't
shock pool until gone
-
If
stained use metal out and have patience as it will work after time.
-
Check
pH and alkalinity as needed
How do I get rid of black algae? |
Black algae is is one of the hardest algaes to fight.
-
Brush
area with nylon brush
-
Shock

-
Circulate
1/2 hour then shut down filter for 24 hours.

I have yellow algae or pollen in my pool |
We have two types of yellow looking algae going on. One is just pollen
that falls in the spring and the other is an algae that sticks to
the walls of our pool. First figure out what you have:
Yellow Pollen:
Pollen will
float on the pool surface and then fall to the bottom of the pool. DO NOT shock your pool to treat this, it will not work!
Yellow Algae:
This grows on the walls and when using your nylon brush it will dust
up into a cloud. To clean yellow algae:
-
Brush
your pool surface with nylon brush
-
Add
a pound of granular shock per 10,000 gal. At the same time put in
several capfuls of yellow treat. (There are several brands on the
market, yellow out, yellow treat etc.)
-
Circulate for half an hour then shut pool filter off for 24 hours
-
Brush
again before turning filter back on
-
After
filter has run for 24 hours CLEAN YOUR FILTER (If you don't clean
your filter then the algae will re-infect your pool water and you
will have to start all over again!)
-
Use
a good nonmetal based algaecide and this will help prevent yellow
algae
-
After
using any kind of yellow out, yellow treat etc, be sure
and do new test reading of your chemicals and readjust as needed.
Why is my family having skin irritation? |
There are several possibilities.
-
High
Chlorine
-
Too
low / high pH
-
Alkalinity
is to low/high
-
LOW
CALCIUM: If your pH is too high, add liquid muriatic acid or granular
sodium bisulfate.

Servicing your pool and spa is more important than most people realize - especially if they've never owned a pool before. So when selecting a pool or spa company, consider the level of service they will offer later.

Try to fill your plaster pool as quickly as possible. If you stop filling and then resume later, the water will leave a ring in the plaster where you stopped.

Never completely drain your fiberglass swimming pool, especially if it is flaking or peeling in places. The pressure from the water on the walls of the pool keeps the fiberglass in place until a contractor can get there to repair it!

Always rinse your water testing materials in the water you are about to test. Using soap or tap water can leave a residue that may interfere with the test.

Always use fresh test strips when Ph testing your water, and take water samples at least 18 inches below the surface.

If you do need to add chemicals, wait to see whether they have the desired effect. Wait 15 minutes for liquid chlorine to circulate (with the pump running) and about 12 hours for the Ph to adjust.

When vacuuming your pool, move at a slow, steady pace. If you move too quickly, the current created by the vacuum head will stir up any dirt on the bottom of the pool.

Write the normal operating pressure directly on the filter with a waterproof marker, so you will never have to second-guess that number.

Leave the pool on the first sound of thunder, and wait 20 minutes after the last sound of thunder to let people back in the pool.
